Solid Plastering: Before and After

The difference that solid plastering makes to a home or building is often dramatic. Before plastering, walls may appear cracked, weathered, uneven, or visually inconsistent—especially in older properties or those with patchy repairs. These surfaces not only detract from the overall appearance but can also lead to problems with moisture, insulation, and long-term durability.

After solid plastering, the transformation is immediate and striking. Surfaces become clean, smooth, and uniform, creating a professional finish that instantly modernises the structure. The walls are now protected from the elements, offer improved insulation, and present a far more polished and appealing exterior. Whether you’re restoring a tired façade or finishing a new build, solid plastering provides a long-lasting upgrade that improves both performance and curb appeal.

Interior and Exterior Applications

Solid plastering is a versatile solution that can be used for both interior and exterior surfaces, offering a seamless and durable finish across a wide range of building types. For interior walls, solid plastering delivers a smooth, hard-wearing surface that can be left raw for a natural look or painted for a refined finish. It’s especially effective in high-traffic areas or older homes where walls may be uneven or made from varying materials. The result is a clean, consistent surface that enhances the feel of any space.

On the exterior, solid plastering acts as a protective barrier against the elements, helping to shield your structure from rain, wind, and UV exposure. It also significantly improves the thermal and acoustic performance of external walls. With the option to apply different textures, finishes, and colours, it can complement modern designs just as easily as heritage restorations. Whether you’re aiming for a sleek architectural look or a rustic finish, solid plastering ensures your property looks sharp and stands strong—inside and out.

Solid Plastering FAQs

While the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, solid plastering typically refers to internal or external wall finishes using a cement-based mix applied by hand. Rendering often refers specifically to external applications. Both offer similar benefits in durability and finish, but solid plastering tends to have a broader scope for textured and architectural finishes.

In most cases, the existing surface must be prepared properly. This can include removing flaking paint, repairing cracks, and applying a bonding agent or key coat. Applying solid plaster over unstable substrates can lead to poor adhesion or failure.

Solid plaster is highly water-resistant, especially when used with waterproof additives or coatings. While it’s not fully waterproof on its own, it provides a strong weather-resistant barrier when sealed or painted properly, making it ideal for exterior walls.

When applied correctly, solid plastering can last 20–30 years or more. It's less prone to cracking than lightweight surface coatings and offers long-term structural protection. Regular maintenance like repainting or resealing can extend its lifespan even further.

The time frame depends on the size of the area, type of substrate, and weather conditions for exterior work. As a general guide, most residential plastering jobs take 2 to 5 days, including preparation, application, and curing time.
